The 1960’s represents one of the best music eras of all time. Known for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and many more, the 1960’s music shaped the minds of America’s youth. Unlike today, the music of the 1960’s encouraged young people to go out and do something to change the world. Not only did the music influence the youth, the artists themselves influenced many people. In 2010, Edward Tywoniak wrote an article about how the music of the 1960’s affected him. He stated “Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and The Band played together in a fundraiser to save sports and arts programs in public schools.” How many musicians do you see today playing in local venues to raise money for schools? And if you did see a musician raising money, did they do it genuinely or just for publicity? The youth of America would go on marches protesting the Vietnam War. However protesters carried large signs painted with song lyrics instead of hateful slogans. The greatest thing about 60’s music is the impact it had on each and every individual. Edward Tywoniak also stated that the 1960’s “was an especially great place and time to "come of age." It was an era in which the optimism of youth had already declared that music and pot was going to change the world. Of course, it never did. But I certainly was changed.” From Edward's perspective, the 1960's music changed him as a person. The music of the 1960's effected everyone who listened to it. The music served as a motivator to get active and start protesting in what you believe in. The main difference between music in the 1960's and music in 2012 is the purpose for creating the music. In the sixties, music most definitely had a purpose. However today, music is created for a variety of purposes.
Today's music
What are today's top artists singing about? Unlike the sixties, today's artists are singing about a variety of things. From heartbreaks to monsters, our generation of artists express themselves in amazing ways. Although today's music serves less of a purpose, the music is still popular and played on every radio station. One of the great things about today's music is that it still has some aspects of the sixties music. Each song impacts a person, but unlike the sixties, it impacts them in different ways. One person hears a song and remember a heartbreak, another person cherishes their love for their partner. The most negative thing about this generations music is the sex and drug references in almost every song.

Everybody let's lose control On the bottom we let it go Going faster, we ain't going slow-low-low Hey yo Hear the beat, now let's hit the floor Drink it up and then drink some more Light it up and let's let it blow Will.I.Am and Britney Spears |
